In August–September 1942, Milne Bay was the site of the first outright defeat of Japanese land forces in WWII.

- Aug–Sep — Allied forces hold the line through weeks of jungle fighting
- Sep 1942 — Japanese withdrawal, the first Allied land victory against Japan
- Today — wrecks, relics and memorial sites remain across the bay
